Er is al een tijdje bekend dat George Clooney zal spelen in de nieuwe film van de Nederlandse regisseur Anton Corbijn. Zijn film zal The American heetten, en is gebaseerd op het boek A Very Private Gentleman van Martin Booth. Corbijn heeft met Control laten zien dat hij in staat is om de stap van fotograaf naar regisseur te maken en hij kan dit nu een mooi vervolg geven.
Het is leuk om te lezen hoe de Amerikanen denken over Corbijn. Een quote van de heren van Slashfilm:
"I’ve been skeptical of Corbijn going from photographer to director. (Which was silly; if he’s good enough to shoot Tom Waits I should’ve had faith.) But his film Control, which dramatized the life of Joy Division singer Ian Curtis, an early photographic subject of Corbijn’s, really won me over."
Corbijn zal de cinematographer van Control, Martin Ruhe, ook gebruiken voor The American. Daarnaast is bekend dat naast Clooney de cast zal bestaan uit Bruce Altman, Thekla Reuten, Paolo Bonacelli en Violante Placido.
Er wordt deze week begonnen met filmen in Italië.
De officiële synopsis tot slot (dan bent u weer helemaal bij) leest als volgt:
Alone among assassins, Jack (played by Mr. Clooney) is a master craftsman. When a job in Sweden ends more harshly than expected for this American abroad, he vows to his contact Larry (Bruce Altman of this fall’s Peter and Vandy) that his next assignment will be his last. Jack reports to the Italian countryside, where he holes up in a small town and relishes being away from death for a spell. The assignment, as specified by a Belgian woman, Mathilde (Thekla Reuten of Focus’ award-winning In Bruges), is in the offing as a weapon is constructed. Surprising himself, Jack seeks out the friendship of local priest Father Benedetto (Italian screen and stage veteran Paolo Bonacelli) and pursues romance with local woman Clara (Italian leading lady Violante Placido). But by stepping out of the shadows, Jack may be tempting fate.
